BACKGROUND: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, operating in 123 countries, delivering food assistance, partnering with governments, and providing common services that allow the entire humanitarian community to save lives in emergencies and build the resilience of food insecure people and communities. Our global footprint is further complemented by presence in another 25 countries and territories where we provide logistical support, facilitate South-South and triangular cooperation and advocate for Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) with regional and international bodies.
WFP has been present in Timor-Leste since 1999. WFP Timor-Leste’s Country Strategic Plan (CSP) 2023-2045 is focused on strengthening national government’s programmes such as Bolsa de Mãe , Cadeia de Valor and Merenda Escolar, enhancing resilience to shocks and improving the food security and nutrition status of people (especially women and children). The National Communications Assistant will enhance WFP’s visibility and outreach in Timor-Leste while ensuring that external communications align with WFP’s brand, the country office communication strategy, and the CSP. This will support the Government of Timor-Leste’s nutrition and food security objectives.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer, the National Communication Assistant will have the following responsibilities: 1. Support audience-focused social media content collection and the development of Facebook social media posts in line with WFP’s communication strategy and Facebook targets. 2. Support media and outreach activities, including developing media pitches, building relationships with media outlets, and arranging meet-the-press events. 3. Support the creation of graphic resources such as infographics, basic images, and videos for posting on social media.
4. Manage and document events, capturing engaging photographs and/or videos of programme activities and results. 5. Ensure timely translation of interviews and external communications, including media releases, Facebook posts, bulletins, leaflets, and other materials, from English to Tetum and vice-versa. 6. Work closely with programme team colleagues to conduct case study interviews, draft human-centred impact stories, and create social media content highlighting WFP’s work.
7. Review content on the WFP website, suggest improvements, and draft new content as needed. 8. Monitor and report two to three times weekly on social media performance, media mentions, and topics of interest or relevance to the country office team. 9. Organize and maintain the image archive, ensuring proper tagging and categorization of photos. 10. Organize and maintain the promotional material stock, conducting regular inventories to ensure accuracy.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Education: High-school diploma. Completion of secondary school education. A post-secondary certificate in the related functional area is desirable. Experience: • Five years of relevant work experience in Timor-Leste with a government, civil society, or private sector organization. • Experience in photography, particularly event coverage and capturing engaging images.
• Experience in the international arena through direct work with an international institution/organization or interactions with international stakeholders. Knowledge & Skills: • Proficiency in Windows MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). • Basic knowledge of graphic design software such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc. • Basic knowledge of video editing software such as CapCut, Adobe Premiere, etc. Languages: Fluency in English and Tetum is essential. Portuguese and Indonesian desirable.
